We're Going on a Caterpillar Hunt
There are Caterpillars in Whitstable that feed in the stems and roots of the plants and we need your help to find them by hunting for their poo!
We are Butterfly Conservation, working on a Kent specific moth project (Kent’s Magnificent Moths). We are working throughout Kent to de-bunk myths on moths, they aren’t all boring pests that munch on your jumpers!! In fact only one species out of 2500 UK moth species eat clothes!!!
The Tankerton slopes are home to a rare moth that in Britain, it is only found in North Essex and Kent!
The caterpillars are dependent on one particular plant; Hog’s Fennel, which also has a very limited distribution and is at risk from sea-level rise! The caterpillars feed in the stems and roots of the plants and we need your help to find evidence of the caterpillars' presence by searching for signs of feeding by looking for frass volcanoes or piles of caterpillar poo!
This fits in perfectly with a local beach clean as they are a coastal specialised species, needing clean beaches and a good habitat as this is one of the only places they can be found, so let’s work together to survey them and then protect them for the future!
We hope to see you there! Free no need to book.

Waterbirds of Whitstable Walk

The site is a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSI), being used as an important roosting site for coastal birds, as well as home to the iconic water vole, and the fisher’s estuarine moth which feeds on a rare plant, hog’s fennel. Let’s see what we can find on our walk! Please wear sturdy footwear and clothing that is appropriate for the weather on the day - don’t forget about suncream! If you have a pair of binoculars we recommend bringing them, but we do have a few spare pairs.
